If you just moved in a new apartment or dorm, chances are that you are already wondering where in the world you are going to place that huge bed from your last flat. This is often a result of miscalculation of the space that is available or it may be because you don’t have a choice of a larger room. Either way, you are faced with the dilemma whether you are going to purchase a new smaller bed or will you go for a Japanese futon.

The futon came from Japan and soon after the westerners adapted the design and made some slight modifications. When compared, the Japanese futon is a mattress that is folded out during the night and then stored during the day, while the western futon rests on a bed frame and when folded becomes a sofa set.

Although it may seem that western futon sets are more functional, it can be noted that it can still occupy space even when folded. Unlike the Japanese futon where you can neatly store it in a closet hidden from plain sight. This frees up the space in your apartment and gives you more room to move in.

As for the health benefits, the Japanese found out that using a futon helps in the good circulation of the blood, corrects posture, prevents back pains and reduces the risk to develop scoliosis. If you’ve noticed, almost all the benefits are concentrated at the back area. This is because it has been noted that by lying flat on the floor, you are not putting too much stain into your spinal area. This will then lead to a much healthier bone and body.

Despite the sturdiness and wide-spread popularity of the western futon, the Japanese people are still not convinced that they can now let go of their beloved Japanese futon. In fact, studies show that there is a relatively low case of scoliosis in Japan.

As for its maintenance, a traditional futon is aired during the day and beaten with a stick. This will ensure that the dust, germs and other debris are removed and that the futon is always clean. Just imagine how many germs live in your mattress.

The futon is ideal for everyone. In fact, individuals of all ages can enjoy the various health benefits whether they are teenagers, grandparents or even toddlers. So if you are one of those people who want to have some more free space while living healthy, then why not choose a futon.
