How to Keep Your Modern Leather Sofa Looking Brand New
A modern leather sofa is definitely a thing of beauty, especially if it is well taken care of. But, if you neglect it, it can be the worst thing that you bought in your entire life. If you look at furniture stores, department stores and even discount shops, you will notice that a modern leather sofa is really quite pricy. Which means that if you manage to buy one and fail to take good care of it, you may just as well flushed your money down the drain.
A typical modern leather sofa set has two noticeable weaknesses. The first one is that it can’t be washed or laundered. The second is that it can be easily punctured or torn when not taken care of. A good example would be if you have a pointed object in your pocket, like a pen and you accidentally sit on it while in the sofa. Another would be if you expose it to direct sunlight.
To keep your sofa shiny new, it is a rule to only use mild and moisturizing soaps to clean the leather. This is to avoid the harsh discolorations and other reactions of chemicals to the leather. Also, it is a very good idea to always wipe the dust of the sofa regularly with a dry cloth. In some cases, you can use a wet cloth but be sure to quickly follow it up with a dry rag to remove any water residue. You see, dust can really damage the finish of the leather thus causing it to fade and lose its shine.
If the sofa set hasn’t been used for some time and there is a build-up of dust and other stains, you can use a diluted solution of mild moisturizing facial soap in some water. This is ideal for clean ups since it won’t harm the leather. So if it is good for your skin, it is good for leather. But, be careful not to over soak the leather with water as this will also contribute to the breakdown of leather. Also, some soap brands have bleach in them so read the label before using.
If you have kids or pets, caring for your modern leather sofa will demand a little extra work. A good tip would be to place the sofa in a position where kids and pets will most likely less occupy. A good tip if you have some cash to spare would be to cover the sofa with transparent plastic to prevent scratches and bruises.
